5 things to do in Corfu

Corfu is one of those places in Europe that beams with Greek culture and food traditions that cannot be replaced. Surviving the devastations of the 2nd World War, the island beams with a spirit like any other and is a highly desirable tourist destination year after year. Let’s explore the five top reasons you should visit this fantastic island.

Old Town (Kerkyra)

A quaint small town, a stroll around this old city is a must when visiting Corfu. The old town’s roots date back to 8th Century BC. Its strategic location allowed the Venetian Empire to protect its maritime trading interests. Today you can visit the multiple remains of this era. Corfu’s architecture carries a distinct note of the Venetian design and style – present in both the old town and port, as well as portrayed in the various monuments around the island.

Cape Drastis

A truly dramatic site, Cape Drastis is located at the most northernly point of Corfu. The tidal actions that created this magnificent site, ensured that it adds yet another picturesque location to Corfu. The cliffs of the cape have an authentic white texture, changing to a tint of orange and beige during the sunset. Bring some water with you and bring a camera!   

St. George’s Church

Located within the Old Town (Kerkyra), the Church resembles a Doric temple – even though it was built by the British in the 19th Century. Like most churches of Corfu , in the church of St. George, was badly damaged by German bombing in the period of the Second World War (1943), but its architectural beauty is still admired by people from all around the world.  The church of St. George operates only once a year, a day that celebrated the memory of St. George. Also, every Easter starts from there Epitaph Church St. George on Good Friday.

Canal d’Amour

Also known  as the “Channel of Love”, this site is somewhat romantic and one of the most famous beaches on the island. It consists of some rocky cliffs that shape a particular sea channel and some nice bays you can reach by several paths. Situated towards the west from the village of Sidari, Canal d’Amour is one of Corfu’s most unique spots – making it more than an ideal location for a proposal.

Palaiokastrista

Even though the name may be somewhat difficult to pronounce this captivating little village offers more than just fantastic scenery. Palaiokastrista is in the north-west of Corfu, and it resembles a paradise. The lush greenery touches the crystal-clear ocean water, while the hedge covered cliffs look over the coastline. A perfect place for a relaxed morning or chill evening, the village is a place you’ll want to return to again. According to Greek mythology the village was the last place Odysseus visited before returning to his home, Ithaca. A point of interest, the Monastery of Palaiokastrista dates back to the 13th century and holds icons among other items from the Byzantine era. A must visit for all the history and culture enthusiasts out there.
