Mykonos in a Glimpse

Greetings to all travel enthusiasts! My best guess is that you are feeling itchy that the time has finally come for a brand new adventure! This is the time of the year where you slip out of hibernation, take out a map and begin to plan your retreat to better pastures. There is a plethora of travel options and thousands of places to visit but undoubtedly, there is none like Mykonos. It does not matter if you are a solitary jaguar who always travels solo, a mesmerising pink flamingo that prefers to flock in groups or the ever-romantic turtledove that always goes in pairs of two. Mykonos is the ideal place for all ages and there is an abundance of things to do and see during your visit.

2879568381_902cb05457_zAccording to Greek mythology, the rocky formations of Mykonos are the exact spot where Hercules buried the Giants and that the large rocks visible throughout are none other than the petrified corpses of the Giants. It inherited its name from the local hero Mykonos who was considered to be the son or grandson of the god Apollo. Even if you are not great fans of the paranormal, the x-files or Greek mythology, it is much easier to fathom why Mykonos that has roots straight back to the Greek god of Sun. Mykonos is also known as a vibrant, partying, glamorous island that boasts with whitewashed sandy beaches and a great number of dance clubs that attracts world famous DJs and celebrity jet-setters.

5029919675_03419257f9_zBesides the sun, the numerous amazing beaches and the buzzing nightlife Mykonos has plenty more to offer. The Mykonos Windmills are an iconic landmark and a must visit as they are delightful and photogenic from every angle, just like Kim Kardashian. They are an integral part of the island’s rich history and most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century. Milling wheat and fishing were the most significant sources of income for the locals.

This 18th-century neighbourhood with the imposing mansions and the colourful balconies is situated near the port and there are plenty of restaurants along the waterfront. The rhythmic waves keep splashing on the outdoor sections of the taverns, the ambience is always soothing and it is a great place to relax and enjoy your coffee or ouzo, lunch or dinner. The amazing colourful mansions, the infinite sapphire of the Aegean Sea and the sight of the picturesque windmills on the hillside above offer the most majestic sunset views. Little Venice is a surreal Greek postcard that has come to life right in front of your eyes.

3298625676_f2055d5130_zAs you stroll through the waterfront there is a great chance that you will come across the most famous Mykonian, which is none other than Peter the Pelican, the official mascot of the island. The original pelican was found wounded and rescued by a local fisherman back in 1954.  When the fisherman set him free, Peter opted to stay in the island. His death in 1986 was a great loss for the locals and a substitute was immediately introduced to continue the tradition.
