Delicious Cretan Dishes
Travellers from all corners of the world jet off to Crete year in and year out to dip into its emerald waters, sunbathe on its soft-sandy bays, and stroll through its ancient archaeological sites while soaking in the Cretan culture, traditions and unique flair. However, Crete is also famous for its amazing cuisine and we have put together some of the top Cretan dishes everyone visiting the island must try!
Although salads are usually boring, the Cretan Dakos is far from boring! The Cretan Dakos salad is basically made up rusks (paximadia) topped with freshly chopped tomatoes, oregano and Mizithra (Cretan cheese) and olive oil! The fusion of ingredients is out of this world!
Want to try something healthy that only grows in Crete? Then you must try a dish made up of rare, wild, boiled grass named stamnagathi with a dash of virgin olive oil and lemon! Super healthy and super tasty!
Greece is world-known for its diverse variety of cheese, and even more renowned for the Greek Fetta! You have all heard of Fetta right? Well, it’s as Greek as it gets! Crete is no exception to the rule and locally produces its own variety of cheese. Crete is a cheesy paradise for all you cheese lovers out there! Graviera is top of our list, made of sheep’s milk, leaving a sweet-salty after affect flavour! Yummy! The more it ages the better it tastes. Cretans also produce a cheese named Staka, which is a creamy sheep and goat cheese mixed with flour. Staka is often used in the Cretan’s cuisine as well or served as a dip. Galomizithra is yet another cheese that is top of my list. It is the most commonly used in the Cretan cooking! Delicious! Tyrozouli and anthotiro are also firm favourite picks!
The island is amazing & the food is extra-delicious! Do you need anything else?
You can enjoy all the above and more so on your next stay at Louis Creta Princess in Chania this summer!
