Visiting the ancient city kingdom of Kourion is a must! The archaeological site overlooks the glistening Mediterranean, creating an impressive contrast with the ruins. The captivating ancient city dates back to the 12th century and at that time it was a thriving hub where tales of heroes were made. The most impressive structure is the Kourion Amphitheatre, built in Greco-Roman style. The island takes pride in its history and so completely restored the amphitheatre. Today theatrical and musical performances are held at the Amphitheatre where people gather to revive the ancient structure and feel the magic it exudes. Other fascinating ruins you’ll stumble upon include the Roman palaces at Kourion, the House of Gladiators, the House of Achilles and the House of Eustolios which are all decorated with mosaic floors dating to the 5th century AD. The 2nd century Nymphaeum will remain in your minds the most. Most who visit Kourion are drawn to this sacred temple that was dedicated to the water nymphs during ancient times.
The Tombs of Kings is an underground burial ground made up of tombs dating back to the 4th century. What fascinated most is the tombs structure as they were carved out of solid rock. Even though the name of the ancient graveyard connotes that Kings were buried there, it is said that it was the burial ground of the Paphian aristocracy. The area was named the Tombs of Kings due to the magnificence of the tombs.
The archaeological site of Agios Georgios is yet another amazing site that no one should miss! This site is a famed place of pilgrimage and excavations have proved it was indeed an Early Christian settlement. At the site you’ll view the ruins of three Early Christian Basilicas and a bath dating back to the 6th century. The necropolis that is found at the edge of the cliff is quite impressive as the tombs have been carved into the rock.
