3 top beautiful cycling routes in Cyprus
Cycling can be a great experience as long as you know the right places to go. Cyprus island offers many beautiful cycling routes, but for this article we have chosen the three top ones.
Amathus Mountain Biking Basic
The Amathus cycling route is fantastic for a light cycle, with mostly flat terrain and a total distance of 29km. Located in the Limassol district, this cycling route starts from Ancient Amathus, heading towards the village of Moni, eventually taking you to Governor’s Beach – where the route loops and takes you back to the starting point at the Ancient Amianthus ruins. During your ride, you can admire the ancient ruins, the mountains and the amazing sea view.
Kalavasos Mountain Bike Basic
A slightly more demanding cycling route takes you around the area of the Kalavasos dam and the surrounding villages. The starting point is at the Kalavasos village in Larnaca district, continuing towards the northwest which will take you past the Kalavasos reservoir onto the Vasa village. Eventually, you continue onto the village of Lageia, which takes you back round to where you originally started at Kalavasos. The route has more dirt roads than the Amathus route and a total distance of 46km, with ups and downs in terrain. What makes up for the slightly more demanding cycle, is the lush scenery and fantastic view on the Kalavasos dam as you go past it.
Alaminos Mountain Bike Moderate
For our next pick, we chose the Alaminos cycling route. The route is 87km long and will definitely take a chunk out of your day – definitely a filling one, however. As demanding as it is rewarding, the route starts from the Alaminos beach and continues to the villages of Mazotos and Alethriko. After 17km the stunning uphill takes you up to Stavrovouni, where the Holy Monastery of Stavrovouni sits on a rocky peak. The route circles back downhill toward the renowned village of Kornos – famed for its traditional beekeeping and clay vessels. Throughout your entire journey, you can witness the best of nature and local customs, but some consider the route back down to the beach a highlight, as it passes by the Dipotamos dam and through the picturesque village of Agios Theodoros.
