The museum’s fascinating exhibits include ecclesiastical clothing, Byzantine wood-carved icons, pictures depicting Zakynthos Island before the destructive 1953 earthquake, valuable documents as well as well-preserved frescoes dating back to the 16th-19th century.

The fascinating museum first opened its doors in 1960. The three-storey museum is divided into multiple rooms, where each room showcases a range of artefacts placed in categories. The first two rooms showcase amazing Byzantine wood-carved icons whereas another two rooms are devoted to 15th-17th century frescoes. The remainder two rooms exhibit 18th century oil paintings created by renowned Greek artists like Kantouni, Koutouzis as well as Doxaras.

Visitors admire the island’s Byzantine treasures as well as gain insight on how the island used to look before the devastating earthquake hit in the early 1950s. Enjoy a walk through the island’s glorious artistic past!
