The blessed and captivating Corfu

Greetings to all travel enthusiasts! Corfu is one of the most beautiful Greek islands that beckons for your visit. It is an amalgamation of beauty and rich cultural history. Throughout the centuries t was ruled by various civilisations and you can spot their undying marks all over this blessed island. It is a holiday destination that should not be missed as it has everything to offer.

The Old Fortress is one of the landmarks of the island and dominates the east side of the capital Corfu town. It symbolises one of the most important periods of the island’s history and it is a fact that the town took its name from the twin peaks (Coryphe) of the fort. In 1386 A.D. Corfu was annexed to the Venetians, serving as one of their main military bases as well as playing a crucial role for trade in the Mediterranean region. The fort was built by the Venetians on a strategic location at the tip of the peninsula but later on for defence reasons it was converted into a separate small island by the digging of a channel. The fortress was successfully used to repel the Ottoman attacks and managed to survive 3 long standing sieges.

Nowadays you have to cross the bridge to enter and it is mainly used as a museum and to house exhibitions and cultural events. On site, you can also see the Church of St George that is a remainder of the British ruling. Walking through the tunnel one can only imagine the battles fought and the soldiers rushing to protect the city in times past. You can visit the museum and the old church before finally walking along the shore walls to take some much-needed photos and simply enjoy the remarkable views. After finishing your rounds you can sit down at the restaurant inside the fort, have a cold beer and put it on my tab!

One of the most popular beaches of Corfu is Agios Gordios Beach that took its name from the church located in the centre of the beach. The coastal scenery is amazing and this beautiful cove is placed on a lush green mountain that is full of olive tree forests and vineyards. It is a beautiful long sandy beach that is fully organised as it offers all amenities and the clear waters are ideal for a refreshing swim while water sports activities are also available.

Sidari village is located 36km away from Corfu town and it is home to some lovely beaches and a natural landscape of green forests. To the west of the village and a part of Sidari beach, you will come across the famous Canal De Amour, the Channel of Love. It is a romantic area with exceptional rock formations that create magical coves and enchanting canals. Legend says that couples who pass through the canals will get married soon whereas for singles if you play your cards right then it is rumoured that you shall find the love of your life on the other side! Actually, the saying has to do with the great experience and how the beauty of the place will give people the urge to share these wonderful moments and their life with someone special.

This is all, for now, my dear fellow adventurers. In conclusion please remember that life is short and beautiful and it is strictly up to you to enjoy it and live it to the fullest.
