Mykonos here we come!

Mykonos’ Chora (Hora) is the island’s capital city. The town is made up of charismatic whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows, bougainvillea gardens, towering windmills and breathtaking bays no one can resist. Chora’s narrow and winding alleys are just waiting to be explored. On every corner there lies an unexpected surprise, like a picturesque chapel, a modern boutique, a contemporary or traditional art gallery. Petros the famous pelican welcomes every visitor, the whitewashed windmills inspire and the locals’ hospitality amazes! Let’s take a look at all you need to do and see when in Chora.

Little Venice is truly a replica of Venice. Little Venice is made up of 16th century homes all lined by the seashore, with balconies literally clinging over the crystalline blue waters. Known as the most romantic area in Mykonos, Little Venice is the perfect spot to watch Mykonos’ famous sunsets while sipping on a glass of wine.

The famed Mykonian Windmills are definitely a sight for sore eyes. They have been the island’s trademark ever since they were constructed in the 16th century during the Venetians stay on the island. They are found by the southern coast of the island, dotting the shoreline and standing high and proud overlooking the Aegean.

The whole island of Delos is a designated national museum. This comes as no surprise to anyone considering the island’s history and the significant role it played in the past. The now uninhabited island is an archaeological haven, where visitors wander through the sacred land of past generations discovering landmarks such as the famed Lion Statues and the ancient Agora.

In the heart of Ano Mera visitors find the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, which was named after a valuable ecclesiastical icon that was found floating on the surface of the sea. The entire Ano Mera settlement is built around the monastery, which remains as one of the most inspiring structures on the island.

The Archaeology Museum of Mykonos was built in 1902 and presents artefacts found on archaeological sites around the island of Mykonos, Delos and Rhenia. The initial purpose of the museum was to display the findings excavated from a necropolis on Rhenia Island.

The Aegean Maritime Museum is yet another must-visit museum in Chora.  The museum showcases models of ships as far back as the pre Minoan period till the 19th century as well as nautical and other artefacts linked to sailing; sailors and the sea in general. The Aegean Maritime Museum is found in the heart of the Chora near the Tria Pigadia area (Three Wells).
