The Greek island of Rhodes is a top destination for everyone’s holidays, not only for the picture-perfect beaches and landmarks it has to offer, but also for the range of activities available to do on the island! The island combines the old world with the new. Rhodes is certainly worth a visit since it is guaranteed no one will be disappointed and will leave full of wonderful memories!

The Old Town is famed for being the most ancient inhabited medieval town throughout Europe. Just the idea is intriguing! Getting lost within the cobblestoned streets of the Old Town is an opportunity to explore and have an adventure! The Medieval City, as it is also known, is surrounded by towering walls and remains one of the most preserved ancient settlements in the world. There you will come across buildings that have literally come out of a history movie, as they represent the island’s rich history from the Byzantine, Middle Ages and Ottoman Period. There you will marvel at wonderful architectural wonders like the Palace of the Grand Master, the Hospital of the Knights, Gothic and Byzantine Churches, Venetian and Arab mansions and much more. All these marvellous buildings can be found by exploring the pebbled winding alleyways of the Old City! What are you waiting for?

Are you a beach lover? Then head for Prassonisi (Green Island). Prasonisi is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island, with two sandy coves lead to an island that can be reached by swimming or on foot. The beach is incredibly popular with surfers, especially during the summer seasons.

The Bronze Deer, you encounter at the entrance of the city’s old harbour, found on the top of two columns, have been the island’s trademark landmark for years. It is amazing that the specific species of deer still lives in the forests of Rhodes at the present. There are multiple legends about how the deer came to exist in Rhodes. As legend has it Rhodes overflowed with snakes in ancient times and Crusaders at that time, brought deer or rather imported deer in order to protect their campsites and get rid of the snakes. It is said that the deer’s antlers exude a substance that agitates the reptiles to the extent to cause them to leave. The deer still exist in the island’s forests because some of them escaped from the camps and sought refuge in the woods. Thus, at present, the deer that can be found on the island are their direct descendants.

Are you a history lover?

If yes, head for the Castle of Kritinia, that lies on the northern part of Rhodes, standing on a hilltop approximately 130 metres above Kritinia Village. The castle was constructed by the Knights of Saint John and its architecture projects features of both the Byzantine and Venetian periods. Initially, the fort was built in three levels, and a different Grand Master of the time was allocated a level.

That’s all for now on Rhodes! Stay tuned for more. Have a wonderful holiday!
