Explore Paphos on Foot
Holidaymakers that seek to get a grip on Paphos every day feel and culture should not miss the free guided tour that takes place every Thursday. The walk sets off at Paphos market area.
The Walk
The ‘on foot’ guide has been organised by the city’s Municipality in cooperation with Cyprus Tourist Guides Association as well as the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO). The two-hour tour has been purposely designed to get tourists as well as locals better acquainted with the city’s centre, an area known as Ktima. Your qualified guide will walk you through the most important landmarks and areas found in the centre of the city, which most consider as merely a shopping district.
We have gathered a handful of the top landmarks visitors get to view while on the walk, giving them the opportunity to experience a different side of Paphos, a destination that overflows in history and charm. By the end of the tour, visitors will have gained insight on how this charming little coastal town progressed, from the late Byzantine and Medieval periods till today.
Ktima is made up of four different parts, the schools, the market and post office area, the Municipality and the Turkish-Cypriot neighbourhood.
Elias & Avgousta Malioti Park
Nature lovers will be impressed by the Elias & Avgousta Malioti Park. The blossoming park is in fact the private-owned garden of two 20th century manors. The impressive manors reveal the architectural style of the first mansions built in Ktima. The green-covered park is also home to the charming Saint John Chapel.
All romantics out there will fall in love with Mousallas Square due to the incredible vistas of New Paphos you will encounter. Mousallas Square overlooks the entire region below, providing breathtaking views of the entire area and coastline.
Town Hall Square
As you walk passed Mousallas Square, you will be guided through the religious area of the town before you arrive at the marvellous Town Hall Square. The impressive Town Hall Square is a miniature replica of the Greek Parthenon and is found amidst the Municipality Gardens. You will also encounter a dominating memorial column which was built to commemorate the Greeks resistance against fascism. Inscribed on the memorial are the names of the Paphian locals who died fighting against the Germans.
Upon leaving the Town Hall Square, you will head for the school area and Kennedy Square before arriving at Paphos Palace Hotel, a neoclassical structure where luxury dances and receptions used to take place in the past.
Archbishop Makarios Avenue is a haven for shopping enthusiasts as it is known as the shopping hub of the city.
Here you will also view ancient colonial buildings such as the Old Court House and Central Post Office, which were built by the British during their rule.
The old Ottoman Baths is also an impressive addition to the area as it was built by the Turks back in the 1500s. The Ottoman Baths used to be a major hotspot for both Turks and Cypriots back in the days.
Laiki Geitonia
Every city of Cyprus is home to a Laiki Geitonia. The Laiki Geitonia is the oldest neighbourhood of the city, which in the past was known as the busiest and most crowded area. Towards the end of your guided walk you will pass through the colourful cobble-stoned alleys of Laiki Geitonia heading towards the city’s traditional veggie and fruit open-market. Wandering through the open-market is a great way to experience and plunge into the daily lives of the locals while enjoying a bit of shopping!
After your two-hour guided walk you will have experienced authentic Paphos, the old and new, the locals charm as well as the most important landmarks found in the heart of the city.
