It is said that the water that runs down between Volakias Mountain and Psiristra Mountain created the gorge. There are thousands and thousands of caves on the island waiting to be explored! One of the most famous caves is Dikteon Cave which as legend has it the Greek God, Zeus, known as the Father of the Gods and Men, was born there!
Aquaworld Aquarium and Reptile Rescue Centre located in Hersonissos, was opened in 1995 and its aim was to encourage interest in the island’s marine life and reptiles. At Aquaworld Aquarium you at the sea can view creatures behind the protection of a safety glass and marvel at a diversity of reptiles found on the island which are tame and thus can be handled and touched. Aquaworld is an exciting experience for anyone interested in nature and wildlife. The Aquaworld Aquarium in Crete is unique in that the animals it hosts have not been taken from their natural habitat. They have sheltered animals from other aquariums and terrariums, which had already been held captive and were poor in health. The Aquariums staff nursed these creatures back to health and are now dwelling within the Aquaworld Aquarium.
