A Walk through Kourion

Throughout history Cyprus has always been a destination sought by conquerors due to its strategic location being situated amongst the crossroads of Europe and Asia. This is one of the reasons so many ancient nations passed through the island at some point in time. Limassol’s Kourion dates back to the 12th century and is today one of the most important archaeological sites found on the island as well as globally.

The ancient city kingdom thrived in the hands of the Romans and Greeks. Excavations have surfaced numerous historical treasures dating back to the Roman and Hellenistic periods which symbolise the city’s importance and wealth during ancient times.

House of Eustolios

Some of the most prized ruins include the marvellous House of Eustolios, the House of Achilles as well as the House of Gladiators which are all home to amazing mosaic floors. It is believed that the 2nd century Nymphaeum was a sacred place which was devoted to the famed water nymphs.

The most impressive of all the historic treasures found is by far the Greco-Roman amphitheatre which is praised for its remarkable architecture, acoustic qualities and breathtaking vistas. Following a complete restoration, the ancient theatre is brought back to life during the summer months with theatrical and musical performances that transport all visitors to the glorified past.
