A definite Must-Visit: Limassol’s Wine Festival
Those travelling to Limassol during the end of August or early September are in for a cultural treat! Limassol’s annual Wine Festival is on and offers lots of fun, wine & dancing! This year’s festival will is taking place from the 24th August till the 4th of September, guaranteeing all its visitors wonderful cultural days and nights!
As every year the wine festival is held at Limassol’s Municipal Gardens close to the coast. Upon entrance it’s hard to miss the gigantic floating statue of a traditional Cypriot winegrower all dressed up in a folklore costume. The floating statue has been the emblem of the festival every since the start in 1961. Across the Municipal Gardens are stalls belonging to the different wineries in Limassol such as SODAP, ETKO, LOEL as well as LAONA and KEO. Visitors are invited to taste varieties of wine all produced locally.
The Wine Festival has become an annual event ever since it was first held in 1961. Its tremendous popularity over the years proves that the festival is lots of fun to the fifteen thousand enthusiasts it attracts every night! Apart from the delicious local wine visitors enjoy traditional local dishes and sweets, folklore dancing and music as well as theatrical performances!
Limassol’s Wine Festival is a reminder of ancient Greek celebrations, where all residents, poor and rich joined to celebrate gods and goddesses like Dionysus and Aphrodite. In the past, all the people joined together feasting and dancing while tasting new wines and taking part in entertainment.
