5 must see landmarks in Mykonos

Mykonos offers all wanderlusters some of the opportunity not only to party the day and night away, experience the high life and relax at some of the top beaches in the world but it also offers travellers the unique chance to visit some of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in Greece. We have put together a short list of our favourite-but feel free to add any we have left behind!

First: Mykonos Windmills

The 16th century grandiose-like windmills are the island’s trademark! Doting the hillside overlooking Little Venice and the glistening Aegean, till this day, the soaring windmills stand proudly symbolising the island’s past, a past where the islanders’ livelihood depended on grinding grain.

Second: Little Venice

This ancient Venetian neighbourhood is made up of a cluster of restaurants, shops and clubs, which make up a unique hotspot for those seeking to have a night out on the town as well as those looking for romance. The 16th century two-storey buildings with balconies literally hanging over the crystalline blue is said to have been the homes of secret pirates in the past.

Third: Paraportiani Church

The group of five chapels that make up the stunning Paraportiani Church is traced back to the Byzantine period and is undoubtedly the most photographed church throughout the island. The whitewashed building shines in the sun as it dips in to the sea. This is the ideal spot to take pictures with the sea as background. Don’t miss out!

Fourth: Panigirakis Castle

Standing on a hilltop, overlooking Mykonos Town, the blue sea and neighbouring islets, Castle Panigirakis is the ideal spot for all you travel dreamers out there. Take a day off from the sun and beach and have a picnic on the peak within the castle’s blossoming greenery, while watching the magical sunset.

Fifth: Matoyianni Street

Matoyianni Street is the heart and core of the island, luring wanderlusters to explore its maze-like cobblestoned lanes that boast with shops, churches, cafes, restaurants and art galleries. Every corner unveils a new surprise!
