The church dedicated to Saint Dionysios is the most important church in Zakynthos, as the saint is the island’s patron saint! In fact Saint Dionysios was so important to the island’s people that his body is kept within the church within a silver casket! The church was built in 1708 and was renovated in 2000. The strong and grand-like structure was built during the Venetian reign on the island and its impressive bell tower is a direct replica of a famous Venetian church found in Venice named Saint Marco!
Undoubtedly, the shipwreck found in Zakynthos waters, is the island’s most impressive and famous landmark! The shipwreck is named Navagio as well as Smuggler’s Cove! Everyone has seen a picture of Zakynthos shipwreck as it has been adopted as the island’s trademark! The cove gained immense value when a ship was stranded about two decades ago after hitting on rocks in the sea during a storm. According to locals, the ship was attempting to flee the Greek Navy as it was smuggling cigarettes. The shipwreck is positioned in the midst of a breathtaking pebbled white beach that is enclosed and surrounded by grand steep cliffs! The most amazing feature is the crystalline blue waters!
Korithi Lighthouse is an impressive attraction which stands on the peak of a mountain overlooking the beautiful sea, in Volimes Village. The 9.5 metre-high majestic lighthouse was constructed in 1897 so as to provide light to passing ships and boats during the night. The imposing lighthouse is a must-see when holidaying on the island as it represents the Zakynthos naval history.
The Zakynthos Venetian Castle stands high on Bohali Hill, on the outskirts of Zakynthos capital town, Zante Town! The castle was constructed 1480 but unfortunately was partially destroyed by the invading Turks. The castle underwent continuous renovations to maintain it. Although today, only the ruins are visible, the castle is still considered as one of the most impressive landmarks on the island. The views of Zante Town and the Ionian Sea from the hill are absolutely amazing!
Based on archaeological findings, an acropolis used to stand on the same spot where the Venetian Castle lies today. The castle’s entrance clearly illustrates the Venetian architectural style as well as the well-known Venetian symbol-the lion of Saint Mark.
