3 Must-Visit Attractions in Limassol

Kourion Beach is definitely one of the most picturesque and visited beaches on the island. Besides the sandy shore and emerald blue waters, visitors get to enjoy a beach day while overlooking the ancient ruins of Kourion Amphitheatre found on a hilltop right next to the shore. Water sports such as hand-gliding, wind-surfing, sailing, parachuting and much more are available. The beach tends to get over-crowded especially during the peak of the summer, so make sure you arrive early!

A must-see temple every visitor should visit is the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, an ancient temple that was built to honour Apollo Hylates, the God of Wood and protector of Kourion. Based on archaeological findings, during the Roman reign on the island the cult of Apollo Hylate thrived for approximately 1200 years starting from the 8th   century BC right until the 4th century AD. The cult combined and praised theories originating from the eastern but also from the western word, at the time when theology began to surface. The God’s name, Hylates originated from Hellenistic periods. Excavations have confirmed that the sanctuary consisted of a bath complex, wrestling ring, holy garden and pilgrim hall. The sanctuary illuminates a sense of mystery and is undoubtedly worth visiting!

Finally, the Archaeological Museum in Limassol is a favourite attraction found in the city’s Public Gardens. The museum offers an insight to Cyprus’ rich and flourishing cultural heritage. The collection exhibited dates back to the Neolithic Age till the Roman Age, offering its visitors a spectacular variety of artefacts such as household objects, pottery, stone axes dating back to the Neolithic Period, Roman Terracotta figurines and shards originating from Kourion and Amathous. In addition, the museum showcases a fascinating collection of gold jewellery, oil lamps, coins, vases, glass bottles and stone and marble effigies.
