The ancient Paphos Medieval Castle is found in the harbour area of Kato Paphos. The castle was initially a Byzantine fort constructed to protect the harbour. In the 13th century the Lusignans rebuilt the castle after it was destroyed by the Venetians during the Ottoman’s invasion in 1570. In the 16th century, when the Ottoman Empire ruled over the island, they reconstructed the fort. Through the passage of time the castle served many purposes. Initially, it was used as protection, but it was also used as prison cells and storage units where the British stored salt. Finally, in 1935 the Medieval Castle was proclaimed as an ancient monument and from then onwards it became one of the most significant landmarks on the island of Cyprus.
