4 Places you should visit in Rhodes
Rhodes is among the most beautiful and intriguing Greek islands. The Medieval sites, amazing views, and pristine beaches have made Rhodes world-famous, attracting thousands of tourists over the world. A drive around will bring you to many other sites, such as the Acropolis of Lindos, the Springs of Kallithea, and various castles spread on the island. Apart from this site, Rhodes has many beaches worth visiting, and Kallithea is among the best options.
Butterfly Valley (petaloudes)
Located on the western side of Rhodes, the Valley of Butterflies lies approximately 27km from Rhodes City, 5km from the southeast of Theologos Village. This unique natural reserve beams with butterflies of the Panaxia genus, species Quadripunctaria Poda. Right at home in the lush green valley, every year (from May to September) you can come and witness the beauty of the butterflies, which have transformed from caterpillars into butterflies. The coolness of this place, the flowing waters and the shade of the trees make it ideal to rest, especially during the hot summer days. Small, wooden bridges cross the river and an uphill path leads to the Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra.
Lindos
The ancient town of Lindos, 45 km to the south of Rhodes Town, was founded by the Dorians in the 10th century B.C. In the 8th century, it was an already established trade center, due to its geographical position between Greece and the Middle East. However, it started to decline when the city of Rhodes was founded, in the 5th century.
A notable and visit-worthy place in this Acropolis is the Doric 4th-century temple devoted to Athena Lindia, where people used to worship their patron goddess, offering items and sacrifices each year.
Kalithea Springs and Kalithea beach is a must-visit attraction on Rhodes island.
The Springs of Kalithea are more than just a tourist attraction, their therapeutic powers were long known before our time. Famous for their ability to treat various diseases and conditions, such as arthritis, obesity, diabetes, tropical diseases, dysentery, malaria, allergies, asthma, cystitis, and intestinal conditions, the springs have become a destination on most people’s bucket lists.
Kallithea Beach
The beach near the springs (Kalithea Beach) is a wondrous place that is a must-see during your visit to Rhodes. Composed of small creeks and pine trees, this lush place with deep waters is the equivalent of an invitation from the Gods of Olympus for one of the most memorable experiences during your summer holiday. Kallithea is relatively quiet: still, it offers the visitor an extraordinary amount of entertainment choices. The beaches, bays, coves and caves, where many locals like to gather, offer something for each member of the family
The medieval town of Rhodes
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, the Medieval Town of Rhodes is a history-filled place that should be on your to-visit list if you’re traveling to Rhodes.
Back in the 14th century, the Knights of St John of Jerusalem built the Medieval Town of Rhodes as we know it today. Having lost their last stronghold in Palestine, in Acre, in 1291, they transformed the island capital into a fortified city able to withstand sieges as terrible as those led by the Sultan of Egypt in 1444 and Mehmet II in 1480.
The town is not just a living history museum. Just inside Marina Gate, lies the old town’s main square, bustling with shops, cafes and tavernas around a central fountain. Be sure to check out some of the hillside bars overlooking the town.
