Old Fortress

Linked to the city of Corfu by a fixed iron bridge, Old Fortress Corfu is a magnificent piece of infrastructure dating back to the Byzantine era. Largely replaced by the Venetians in the 18^th century, the fortress has seen three consecutive attempted sieges by the Ottomans. In 1864 it became part of the Greek territories. On the outside, the fortress resembles a part of the mythical city of Atlantis. As if a part of it erected from the ocean’s depths. The fortress is located on a huge part of a rocky peninsula famed for its ocean views. The Fortress’s last siege took place in 1716, when it was defended by General Matthias Von Schulenburg. You can admire his statue at the entrance to this impressive site.

Museum of Asian Art

Corfu’s history is shaped by different eras, powers, and cultures. Its eclectic nature is what makes it unique. The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu is a perfect example of this fact. Housed in a neoclassical building, the Museum was constructed between 1819 and 1824 by the British who ruled over the island during those times. Previously the building used to serve as the residence of The British High Commissioners of the Ionian Islands. Containing items from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Korea, Siam, Tibet, Nepal, Cambodia, and Thailand, the museum’s collection of exhibits is vast and diverse. Visitors can marvel at Samurai armor, weapons, Chinese porcelains, pieces of sculptures and ceramics, among many other fascinating pieces of culture and history.    

Old Perithia

Our last historical experience in Corfu will take you on an adventure through the ghost village of Old Perithia. Located on the southside of Corfu, 8km away from Kassiopi, the village is an ideal place for a walk – offering great views and landscapes. Originally created in the 14^th century, the Byzantine era village was actually built in the Venetian style. Even though most of the buildings are damaged, the Venetian architecture is still noticeable and impresses visitors to this day. At the entrance, you will be greeted by the bell tower of St. Jacob from Persia. Eight churches surround the village, portraying the deep religious faith of the locals.
