Just outside Rhodes’ capital city you’ll find the ancient city of Lindos, home to the dominant Acropolis. The ancient Acropolis of Lindos, built in honour of the Greek goddess Athena, was initially constructed in 1100 BC. Later on in the 6th century the Acropolis was re-built. Lindos boasts with history and culture making it a must-see town when in Rhodes.
The 14th-century Palace of the Grand Masters lies nestled in Rhodes Old Town. The palace was constructed by the famed Knights of Rhodes who ruled the island from 1309 to 1522. After an ammunition explosion in 1856 the Palace of the Grand Masters suffered significant destruction. It was later on rebuilt as an elaborate medieval holiday home for Italian Victor Emmanuel III, and later for Benito Mussolini. The latter’s name is still visible today on plaque located near the entrance. Even though the summer residence was built for these two men neither visited it! Today the palace has been turned to an interesting museum exhibiting Rhodes long and exciting past.
The Valley of the Butterflies is one of the top three most popular attractions throughout the island. Its popularity is mainly attributed to the millions of butterflies which swamp the valley during July till September. The Jersey Tiger Moths are lured to the valley thanks to the storax trees that smell of vanilla. When resting on the branches of the trees the butterflies’ wings seem black, but when they fly their wings turn red! Those seeking a shade from the sun amongst flowing rivers, ancient bridges and nature treks should definitely add the Valley of the Butterflies on their bucket list.
That’s all for now guys from Rhodes. There are lots more to come!
