Mykonos Windmills!

With their distinct whitewashed figure and form, the celebrated Mykonos Windmills have made their mark as Mykonos landmark.

windmillsStanding proud since the 16th century, the grand-like Windmills were initially built due to the strong winds that are always present as well as the island’s geographical position. Back in the days, Mykonos was a key grain and flour supplier. Ships used to stop in Mykonos to collect refined grain and flour. Mykonos’ economy was dependent on supplying grain and flour for trade from the 16th to the 20th century.

The Windmills seized operation in the 20th century due to the introduction of industrialisation. Ever since they have become a major sightseeing landmark and one of the most photographed attractions throughout Greece.

In the past, Mykonos was home to 20 Windmills. The majority of the Windmills spread across the Chora, Alefkandra as well as the harbour. Approximately half of the Windmills were operating well right up to the beginning of the 20th century. Currently, seven of the twenty Windmills still stand proudly, reminding the locals and visitors of the island’s past. Geronimos Windmill is perhaps the only windmill that operated right up to the 1960s. Currently, the privately owned windmill is well-preserved and all the machinery is still intact.mykonod
