Mykonos Grandiose Town Hall & Mavrou School
The island of the Winds has long been a favourite tourist destination attracting jetsetters from all corners of the world in search of enjoying its golden bays and party scene. The island is also known for its glamorous lifestyle, gourmet restaurants, and fashion scene as well as attracting the rich and famous!
Nonetheless, the history and cultural lover will also fall in love with Mykonos as it is home to many architectural masterpieces that are simply marvellous! One of these is the island’s Town Hall. The two-storey building dates back to 1780. Its elegance is captivating and its most outstanding feature is its roof, which is made of bricks that were manufactured during the Orlofika period to be in line with the Seat of the Russian General Council of the Archipelago.
In later years, the Town Hall came under the control of Mykonos Community. The Mykonos Community was a group of people that constituted the state of the island before the Greek Revolution. Today, the Town Hall is home to the Municipality of Mykonos.
Next to the Town Hall is the very first public school of Mykonos known by the locals as the Mavrou building. The school was built by Othona back in 1859. Back then the school was joined with a bridge to the Temple of Saint Nikolaos of Kadenas. The Temple of Saint Nikolaos of Kadenas is said to have been constructed as far back as the 1700s. Saint Nikolaos is considered the island’s protector. The Saint protects the island’s harbour from the strong winds. Furthermore, Saint Nikolaos was present in all ancient naval maps as far back as the 15th century.
