Mountainous Walks through the White Mountains of Crete!

The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) is the largest and most beautiful mountain range in Crete. The mountain range is made up of multiple peaks that reach more than 2000 metres high. The highest mountain is Pachnes, where its peak soars 2453 metres high. The White Mountains are also home to more than 50 gorges which typically end at the infinite blue sea.
The mountains are covered in snow till spring, which is why they were given the name White Mountains. Also, during the summer, the mountains’ limestone rock sparkle white in the hot sun. The southern part of the mountain range dips into the blue sea. The White Mountains are famed as being one of the rarest natural places across Europe. Visitors soak in the breathtaking views, laze on the bays, trek through the mountains and gorges as well as observe rare birds, wild animals and plants.

The first is a long walk that runs from Omalos to Kallergi, where you can enjoy marvellous bird eye views of Samaria Gorge.
Pachnes, the highest of the mountains, is located in the heart of the White Mountains. Pachnes can be reached by multiple treks. Once on the top you will enjoy stunning vistas across the entire western part of Crete.
A more difficult trek is from Agios Ioannis to the peak of Zaranokefala and Pachnes. It is considered difficult hike as the path is not always defined. However, it is one of the most striking walks you can embark on!
One of the easiest and most popular treks you can explore starts from Omalos and ends at the peak of Psilafi. On the way visitors soak in magnificent views of Omalos as well as Tripti Gorge.
