Limassol, the cosmopolitan city of Cyprus, was known till Medieval Times as Nemesos. The city was named Nemesos, meaning In Between, due to the fact it was situated in between Kourion and Amathous, two ancient city kingdoms. Limassol Castle!
Limassol Castle serves as a symbolic landmark in the city as it carries a story of its own. Initially constructed in 1228 to protect the city’s harbour, the fortress fell in the hands of the many occupants that passed through the island. During the British occupation the castle was used as prison cells.
Museum Hunting!
Today, Limassol Castle is home to the Cyprus Medieval Museum. The museum showcases exhibits that mirror the historic development of the island, meaning its social, cultural as well as economic progression, traditions and customs starting from the 3rd to the 18th century.
Ancient City of Amathous!
Amathous thrived and prospered during ancient times. As legend has it, Amathous is where Theseus took the pregnant Ariadne to be looked after and protected. Excavations have brought to light many historic treasures including an Agora (market) and an Acropolis. Furthermore, five impressive Christian Basilicas have been excavated which date back to the Archaic Period, the Roman Period and early Christian Period.
