The Pink & White Süleyman Mosque of Rhodes

As most of the Greek Island, Rhodes fell under the Ottoman Empire rule in 1522. In honour of the Sultan, Süleyman I, who conquered the island, the Ottoman Turks built a pink and white mosque with a marvellous minaret on top again in 1522.

Süleyman I was one of the most famed, feared and powerful leaders during the time as he expanded the Ottoman Empire, conquering European and North American land.

During the Ottoman rule, the Turks converted the majority of the island’s churches into mosques. The pick and white Süleyman Mosque is one of the most impressive structures left behind by the Ottoman Empire. Its dominant structure and colourful presence make it impossible not to notice. Furthermore, the mosque is a symbol of the island’s turbulent past under the reign of foreign enemies.
