The Church of Saint Jason & Sosipater
The enchanting Church of Saint Jason and Sosipater is nestled between Mon Repos and Garitsa in Corfu Town, hidden amongst towering houses. The Church of Saint Jason and Sosipater is worth a visit simply to view its outstanding architectural style.
Besides its unique architectural style the church is also considered a rare monument as it was built around 1000 AD, making it the oldest church in town. The architectural style of the tiny basilica is Paleo-Christian. The rare Byzantine church was built using stone and marble, of which materials were taken from neighbouring Paleopolis, an ancient city kingdom. Most marvel at its towering wooden doors and dominating 17th century bell tower.
The small basilica is dedicated to Saint Jason and Saint Sosipater, two local saints who were both disciples of Apostle Paul. The two saints spread the word of God and Christianity at around 70 AD in Corfu. Apparently, the tombs of the saints are found on the right and left of the church’s holy gate.
Inside the church, visitors marvel at the impressive frescoes that decorate the walls that date back to the 11th and 14th century. Recent excavations revealed an ancient burial ground that was used from early-Christian period till 1900.
