Stunning Zakynthos is loved by everyone
Greetings to all travel enthusiasts! Today we are off to have a quick look at the beautiful island of Zakynthos. Located on the Ionian Sea with a population of around 50,000 people and a coastline of roughly 123 kilometres wide it is a top summer holiday destination. The majority of tourists is mostly Brits and it is an island loved for the luscious green nature, the lovely beaches, the secluded coves and caves as well as the lively nightlife. Whatever your needs Zakynthos can accommodate.
Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach is the most famous attraction and the trademark of the island. Included in the small list of beaches worldwide that purely amaze it is one of the most photographed and recognised places in the world. Of course, the real thing and the experience is way much better than the photos so all tourists that visit Zakynthos also go to Shipwreck beach. The name is derived from a rusty old ship that is sunken in the sand and the only way to get there is by boat. The imposing cliffs of the bay, the crystalline waters, the golden sand and the rusty ship create an amazing image that must not be missed.
The Blue Caves are also a must visit when in Zakynthos. They were discovered in 1897 and the geologic formations gave life to a series of caves that lie along the North West coast of the island. They took their name from the blue reflections of the water inside the caves and they are also accessible only by boat. You can either hop on a guided tour or rent a small boat to spend as much time as you like on each location. Swim inside the Blue Caves where the shaded areas keep the water refreshing and rejuvenating.
The Church of Saint Dionysios is dedicated to the patron saint of Zakynthos and it is one of the most important religious sanctums of the island. The church was initially built in 1708 by the Venetians and it was restored and renovated in 2000. The architecture of the building is magnificent and the most remarkable bell tower is a replication of the Saint Marco’s bell tower in Venice. Saint Dionysios is also known as a miracle worker since he performed many miracles and until today many people visit to pray and ask for his help. His body is being carefully kept in a silver casket and every year on his name day (24th of August) there is a big celebration with the casket paraded through town.
This is all for now my dear fellow adventurers. In conclusion please remember that life is short and beautiful and it is strictly up to you to enjoy it and live it to the fullest.
