Museum Hopping in Chania!

Every museum offers valuable collections taken from Chania’s past, illustrating its history as well as customs and traditions.
First Stop-Archaeological Museum
The Venetian Saint Francis Monastery is home to the Archaeological Museum, which is found right in the heart of Chania. The collection of the museum includes marvellous artefacts such as Roman mosaics depicting Ariadne and the Greek God Dionysus, findings taken from the Minoan period as well as ancient coins, clay objects, jewellery and sculptures.
Second Stop-Folklore Museum
The Folklore Museum invites all of you to take a voyage back into Crete’s past. This is where visitors can marvel at traditional items, crafts, traditional furniture, garments as well as embroidered and woven cloths
Third Stop-Nautical Museum
The Nautical Museum offers insight into Crete’s long nautical history. The museum’s collection includes ship models originating from antiquity up to the present. The museum also exhibits the remains of real life vessels. There is a special section dedicated to the invasion of the Germans in Crete.

The exceptional War Museum is housed within the military camp of Tzomapanaki. The collection of the museum includes artefacts and objects originating from a variety of wars the Cretans fought in such as the Macedonia War, the Balkan War, the Battle of Crete and the revolution of the Cretans against the Turks.
Fifth Stop- Byzantine Museum
The byzantine Museum is found in the hub of Chania’s Old Town and its exhibits an extensive collection of artefacts originating from the Byzantine period. Some of the most fascinating findings include sculptures, mosaics, ceramics as well as Byzantine ecclesiastical icons.
