Looking for Culture – Kourion Theatre

Are you a history buff? Do you feel like diving in Limassol’s culture? Head for the magnificent Kourion Theatre! The ancient open-air theatre was built in the 2nd century and is the highlight of Kourion, the ancient city kingdom of Cyprus.

The Kourion Theatre transports all visitors to the glorious Hellenistic Period with its marvellous ancient Greek architecture.

As hinted above, the Theatre was constructed by the ancient Greeks. However, it went through a number of changes through the passage of time. During the Roman Period, the seats of the Theatre were moved further back from the stage so as to protect the spectators from the wild animals which took part in gladiator contests. The present structure was shaped towards the end of the 2nd century.

In the 4th century, the Kourion Theatre was ruined. After feverous restorations, the Kourion Theatre still stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the glistening blue sea from above. Don’t miss out on the chance to attend one of the many theatrical and musical performances held within the amphitheatre during the summer months! It is a spectacular experience!
