Limassol’s Medieval Castle & Museum

The 14th – century Medieval Castle was built over the site of an older Byzantine fort. During the passage of time many conquerors used the Medieval Castle for different purposes. The Venetians destroyed it; the Ottomans renovated it and then used it for the military, whereas the British used it as prison cells. The Medieval Castle was also the place where Richard the Lionheart tied the knot to Berengaria in 1191. Apparently, this is where Richard the Lionheart was also crowned the King of Cyprus and Berengaria was crowned the Queen of England.
The Medieval Castle has been turned into a Medieval Museum where visitors are introduced to a fascinating Byzantine collection as well as medieval relics including suits of armour, pottery dating back to the Ottoman Empire as well as religious artefacts and tombstones.
