Exciting Paphos is the European Culture Capital for 2017

One of the country’s most important religious landmarks is Panagia Chrysopolitissa that is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is located at the centre of the busy area of Kato Paphos and was constructed in the 13th century above the remains of a byzantine cathedral. The floors have impressive mosaics and it is also used by the Catholic parish of the wider Paphos area. Next to the church you will find Saint Paul’s Pillar and the story says that this is on these pillars that Saint Paul was whipped with 40 lashes by the Roman governor for evangelising in the island.
Saranta Kolones is an ancient byzantine castle located in Kato Paphos and a symbol of the city’s heritage. The name originates from the forty columns that were the base for the construction of the castle. It was built to protect the city from Arab and pirate attacks and was later restored by the Lusignians in the 13th century. Some areas are still well maintained like the towers and the dungeons while a large number of the original granite columns are spread all over the site. The ancient Odeon which also lies in Kato Paphos is a small 2nd century auditorium made up of limestone blocks. Nowadays is used for concerts and theatrical plays.

The Paphos Zoo in Pegeia area is just a few minutes away from the centre of Paphos and is set in a lush natural environment of more than 100000 square meters. Paphos Waterpark is located in Kato Paphos along the coastal road and it offers a great opportunity for fun family time. It has more than 30 water rides and slides, a lazy river and swimming areas.
