Corfu’s One-and-Only Mon Repos Palace

Located on the hilltop of Analipsis Hill in Kanoni, Corfu’s marvellous Mon Repos Palace is one of the most favoured and visited tourist attractions of the island. Archaeologists believe that the palace was constructed in the area where the ancient city of the island used to stand because the remains and ruins of the ancient city are located right across the palace.

Frederic Adams, the British Commissioner, built the inspiring palace in 1826. The Commissioner gave the palace to Nina Palatianou, his beloved wife who was a Corfiot. In spite of its small size, the palace is an architectural wonder!

As time progressed, Mon Repos was used as a summer retreat by all the British Governors of the island. In 1864, when Corfu was officially united to Greece, Mon Repos was given to the Greek King George I as a gift.

In 1921 Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh was born at Mon Repos Palace! He later grew up to become the loving husband of Queen Elisabeth II.

During the Italians reign, the palace became the home of Parini, who was the Italian governor of the entire Ionian archipelago.

Currently owned by the island’s Municipality, the palace is home to an inspiring museum which exhibits fabulous ancient treasures found throughout the Ionian Islands. The gardens of Mon Repos are also a top attraction amongst tourists and locals alike, providing a refreshing breather from the hustle and bustle of city life.
