The sun is hot, the bay is golden and the water is crystal blue, so what are you waiting for? Time for a Crete beach tour don’t you think?
Váï Beach, also known locally as Finikodassos, meaning Palm Forest, is a stunning golden bay with a densely palm tree covered forest as a backdrop. The palm trees are said to be Europe’s largest palm tree forest and date back more than 3000 years. Based on local legend, the palm trees grew on the bay after Saracen pirates threw away date stones which washed up on the bay. During the summer season, the beach overflows with sunbathers so those looking to beat the crowds should arrive quite early in the morning to book a spot!
Elafonisi Beach’s sparkling turquoise waters beautifully contrast with the pink sandy bay making it one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. Enjoy a beach day paddling in warm crystalline waters or sunbathing, playing in the water or just chilling under the hot sun while being surrounded by fine views. Elafonissi is a top beach destination, so be prepared, you will not be alone!
Matala Beach first became a hot spot amongst the hippie crowd in the 60s and 70s. Nowadays, it is a top attraction at nightfall amongst the hopeless romantics who sip on a drink while enjoying the view of the nearby illuminated caves. All throughout the day, the beach attracts the crowds looking for a cooling dip.
Sweetwater Beach is an ideal bay for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of large crowds. The bay is hidden amongst soaring mountains and can only be accessed by boat or on foot. Under the bay’s pebbled covered surface there are small natural springs which flow with fresh water that water the surrounding trees, hence the bay’s name.
Balos Beach is yet another popular beach in Crete that transports every visitor to the Caribbean with its soft white sand and crystalline blue water. After spending a relaxing day chilling under the sun and dipping in these majestic waters, climb to the top of the hill where you’ll find a fabulous Venetian Castle!
Myrtos Beach has attracted the Boho crowd since the 60s. Those looking for a laid back and chilling beach should definitely add Myrtos Beach on their beach list. Besides the stunning bay, the area is also famed for the many ancient Minoan sites.
Frangokastello Beach is what some may call a historic spot both literally and metaphorically! The beach was named after the Venetian castle on site which used to guard the town against raiding pirates. Besides the dominant fort that decorates the bay area, visitors can also visit other ancient ruins in the surrounding area. Therefore, all beach lovers can make a day out of sightseeing as well as sunbathing.
