Akamas Peninsula for Everyone
The Akamas National Park is celebrated as the most natural and breathtaking location across Cyprus. Found near the city of Paphos, Akamas Peninsula, decorates the western coast of the island. The area is spread over a 230 square kilometre stretch of natural land, and is home to green-covered valleys, fascinating gorges and hidden bays, a true haven for all nature lovers. Avakas Gorge is the most-visited gorge in Akamas. The gorge is nestled on the tip of the peninsula. The length of Avakas is about 2.5 kilometres and is surrounded by towering rocks and cliffs of 260 feet on both sides. Most nature lovers are impressed by the diversity of rare plants, flowers, reptiles and wild mountain goats found only in Avakas Gorge.
Lara Bay is a breathtaking bay famed as being the nesting place to the Green Turtle and Hawk’s Bill Turtle that use the beach to breed. The beach is a protected area in order to make sure the breeding of the turtles is not interrupted. Besides the bay’s beauty and picturesque setting that will amazes all visitors, witnessing the wonder of nature in the making is the cherry on the top kind of experience! Baby turtles hatching and running to the sea water is an unbelievable experience to witness!
The Baths of Aphrodite are nestles in Akamas, in the heart of a green-covered spot with a rather towering fig tree that provides shade to all who visit the baths. A natural spring supplies water to the grotto. As legend has it, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty bathed at exactly this spot after her daily swim in the sea beneath. It was during one of her routine baths that Adonis first set eyes upon her and instantly fell in love! The legend says that the Baths of Aphrodite is a magical spot, and whoever swims in the water will be granted eternal youth and beauty!
Setting on oh hiking trails is a must when exploring Akamas as tourists soak in the beauty of Natural Park fully. These are many trails holidaymakers can choose from, but the most recommended include the Adonis trail, the Smigies Trail and the Aphrodite Trail. All three take explorers through scenic gorges and green valleys and golden coastline where besides meeting the animals and fauna, tourists soak in the stunning vistas of the bright blue Mediterranean.
