5 Things to do in Crete during Wintertime

A wonderful place to visit during any time of the year, Crete is packed with adventure and intrigue. From mesmerizing landscapes to places looming with history and culture, there is an opportunity to see and enjoy it all – even during the winter!

Picnic by the sea

Swimming in the sea and taking a beach day is definitely an option in Crete, even during the winter. Well, only if you’re into cold temperatures. For most, a stroll on the beach is enough. With that in mind, our first suggested activity would be a picnic by the beach. With barely any tourists around, and a definitely more pleasant (less soaring) temperature. A picnic is an ideal option to take advantage of the seaside while taking in some of those stunning Cretan views. Any secluded beach on the island is amazing, however, Preveli and Kommos would be the ones offering the best site and views. With lush greenery, as well as golden sand. The best of both worlds essentially. Oh, and remember to bring your own snacks, as most local beachside businesses are closed during this time of the year.

Museums

For those who are less outdoorsy, a visit to the island’s archeological museums is a fantastic way to spend a day or two. There are a handful to choose from, however, if you don’t have time to visit all of them (or you simply don’t want to) we’ve picked out the ones most worth going to. Firstly, the most famous museum, the Heraklion Archeological Museum is renowned across Europe. With a sizeable collection of treasures from the Minoan Civilization, it’s an educational rollercoaster. If you’re into anthropology and history you’ll find more than a plethora of interesting knowledge here. It goes without saying, if you want to take in most of the history, you should spend at least 2 hours there.

Knossos Palace

If museums aren’t adventurous enough for you, a trip to the Palace of Knossos should do the trick. One of the most popular archeological sites in Europe, the Palace of Knossos is located in the north of Crete, south of the Heraklion. Built by the Minoans, the site was discovered and excavated in the early 20th century by a British team of archeologists led by Arthur Evans. An amazing piece of history, the site is ideal to visit during the off-season (not summer). No crowds. No tourists. Just a monument of a connection to the island’s history for you to enjoy practically all by yourself.

Raki

You can’t go to Crete without being offered Raki. The Cretan Raki, also called ‘tsikoudia’ is a delicious pomace brandy that is served on almost every occasion on the island. No wonder the Cretan Rakadikos came about. Unlike in local tavernas, the Tsikoudia is the highlight of your experience. With the tapas-like dishes being served as you enjoy the mighty flavors, resulting from the combination of some of the best food and drink one could have. This one is a definite destination for everyone.

Chania

Last but not least, a trip of discovery around the town of Chania, and its mesmerizing Lighthouse and Venetian Harbour. Especially stunning during evening hours, the town’s architecture is enough to get lost in wonder. With structures dating back from the Venetian period, Chania’s streets bring out the local history and culture. The winter gives the town a different atmosphere and is definitely worth visiting, as the crowds of tourists disappear during this season.
