The oldest produced wine in Cyprus is Coumandaria, which is a sweet red wine that was first produced by the Knights of Saint John in Cyprus. The villages that surround Paphos and Limassol are famed for their traditional wineries. The island has designated wine routes, which take you through picturesque villages, natural landscapes and fabulous vineyards while stopping at diverse wineries on your way to sample home-produced wines. The most impressive are the Koumandari Villages Route. Cyprus also produces Zivania-a local distilled spirit. Many travellers visit the Kykkos Monastery only to buy some of their famed homemade Zivania.
