4 Reasons to Visit Zakynthos

The beautiful Ionian Island of Zakynthos has long now made it in the top holiday destination list of our times. Why visit Zakynthos? Those who have already had the pleasure of holidaying on the island will have lots and lots to say about its striking golden bays, natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and fascinating historic sites.

The island’s grandiose Venetian Castle stands on the peak of Bohali Hill overlooking the entire Zante Town below! Built in 1480, the castle suffered in the hands of the invading Turks who partially destroyed it. Starting from 1540, extensive and ongoing renovations took place to repair the fort to its original structure. Due to the passage of time, only the ruins and remains of the castle are visible today. Nonetheless, the castle is still considered one of the most impressive landmarks on the island not only for the actual structure but also for the marvellous views of the glistening blue sea and town ahead.

Saint Dionysios Church dedicated to the patron saint of the island is the most loved and important church in Zakynthos.  Today, the fabulous architectural wonder is home to Saint Dionysios body which is kept in a silver casket. The Venetian church was initially built in 1708 and renovated in 2000. The grandiose structure was constructed during the Venetian reign on the island and its most impressive feature, the bell tower, is a replica of Saint Marco’s bell tower in Venice.

The stunning Blue Caves are undeniably a top attraction every holidaymaker should visit when on the island. Since they were discovered in 1897, the Blue Caves have attracted the crowds who seek to view the wonder of nature firsthand. The largest of the Blue Caves is named Blue Grotto.

Shipwreck Beach is undoubtedly the island’s most impressive landmark! Some will even say that it’s Zakynthos trademark. Shipwreck beach is also known as Navagio as well as Smuggler’s Cove! The fabulous cove gained immense value when a ship was stranded about two decades ago after hitting on rocks in the sea during a storm. As legend has it, the ship was attempting to flee the Greek Navy since it was smuggling cigarettes. The shipwreck is nestled in the heart of a breathtaking pebbled golden-white beach that is surrounded by high-steeped cliffs! What amazes most is the crystalline-blue clear waters!
