3 Top Natural Landmarks in Zakynthos
No holiday in Zakynthos is complete without visiting its magical attractions! Let’s take a look at three most popular natural landmarks on the island that every tourist must-visit.
First stop: Blue Caves
The Blue Caves are without a doubt one of the most popular attractions throughout Greece. The stunning caves were geologically formed as a result of erosion and their beauty is magnifying. The glowing sapphire waters reflect the colour of the blue sky which is then mirrored on the surface of the naturally created caves creating an exquisite and overwhelming effect. The largest cave is named Cyanoun Spilaio. The Blue Caves are only accessible by boat and it is recommended to visit this spectacular landmark during the early morning hours or just before sunset in order to appreciate their beauty at their peak.
Second Stop: Gerakas Cape
The Cape of Gerakas can be found on the Eastern part of Laganas Beach. Although it is part of Laganas Beach, which is considered as the most popular turtle nestling spot on the island, Gerakas Bay is protected by the National Marine Park and thus remains unspoilt and has maintained its natural beauty. A definite must-visit, Gerakas Beach is renowned for its turquoise shallow waters and golden sand.
Third Stop: Navagio Beach
Navagio Beach, also known as the Smuggler’s Cove and Shipwreck Beach, was named after the wreck a smuggler’s ship named ‘Panayiotis’ which sank in 1983 on the coast of Agios Georgios Beach, as it was then known while smuggling cigarettes. The bay is famed for its towering limestone cliffs, white sandy beaches, and crystalline waters, which attract countless tourists year in and year out. Navagio Beach is perhaps the most photographed beach throughout Greece. After the ship sank, the golden sand of the sea literally swallowed parts of the smuggling ship, revealing only parts of its now rusty body. This image is accentuated by the golden-white sand and azure blue waters of the beach making it an ideal location to take memorable pictures.
