3 quiet villages to visit during summer in Cyprus

Here are some villages you can visit in Cyprus during the summer if you like peace and quiet.

Polis Chrysochous

Located 35km northwest of Paphos, the sub-district of Polis Chrysochous (simply known as ‘Polis’ is home to some of the most stunning natural areas on the entire island. The region has a fascinating, deep history dating back to the kingdoms of Marion and Arsinoe. The local Archeological Museum displays the meticulous findings of excavations that spanned over 20 years. The history extends to the Ottoman empire, as visitors can see the Agios Andronikos church which was converted into a mosque in 1571. Fortunately, the original paintings were uncovered in 1974 for all to witness the authentic architecture and beauty of the frescoes from the 16th century.

A piece of mythology also makes its way into the local area’s repertoire, the Baths of Aphrodite – a freshwater grotto covered by a wild fig tree. A variety of nature trails surround the area and offer nature lovers to spot local fauna and migrating birds.   You can enjoy the fresh fish from the local fisherman in Latchi and the virgin beaches of Polis while staying at the Polis 1907 hotel.

Pissouri

The quaint village of Pissouri is one of the most iconic places to visit in the Limassol district, located only 30 km away from the city. Built on a green hill, the village allows for stunning views of the sea, as well as the mountainside. The origins of the name Pissouri are still backed by different theories, some pointing to the fact that the ‘pissa’ resin, which comes from pitch pine, was produced here during the Byzantine era. Hence the name, Pissouri.

The village is a tapestry of painting like scenery. With stone homes sat on a slope, surrounding greenery and picturesque roads and trails, the village is the perfect place to enjoy the local Halloumi and Sultanina grapes (sweet yet seedless). When the pleasures end, the fun begins. The beach area in Pissouri is a watersport extravaganza, with golden sandy beaches, and multicolored pebbles.

Kato Pyrgos

Erected on the northern foothills of Troodos, Kato Pyrgos is surrounded by a combination of sea scenery and hill views. The village is abode to the Chapel of Panagia tis Galokistis. This historic location contains hagiographies that date back to the 14th and 12th centuries. Even though the village is in the Nicosia district, due to the Turkish invasion of 1974, it is only accessible via the Paphos region. In any case, Louis Hotels offers accommodation in both Paphos and Nicosia, making your stay that much more comfortable.
