When holidaying in crowded tourist resorts like Protaras, it’s a good idea to escape the hustle and bustle just for a few hours and experience the local character. Ayia Thekla is a tiny coastal village found close to Protaras. It was named after the ancient church found at the village named Saint Thekla. The church is one of the oldest landmarks in the area, which dates back to the middle ages. The village is the ideal spot to soak in extraordinary scenery of the surrounding landscape. The beach found on the coast of the village is absolutely amazing as well! You have the chance to relax in a serene natural landscape while enjoying the sunny day and crystalline waters.
Add some history and culture to your holiday when in Protaras and set off on a day trip to Varosha, the ghost-city, which is part of Famagusta. The trip takes just over half an hour and is one of the most visited areas on the island. The story behind the deserted city is quite devastating. During the early 70s, Varasha was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, attracting not only enthusiastic travellers but also celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot. Nonetheless the cosmopolitan town was deserted literally overnight after the Turkish invasion in 1974 and has sadly remained deserted ever since. Once there you will see deserted hotels and homes as well as restaurants, parked cars, clothes hanging on the line and much more. The most renowned are the beaches, characterised as being the most beautiful on the island with golden sands and crystalline blue waters!
That’s all for now on Protaras! Stay tuned for more!
