3 dreamy lakes to visit in Cyprus this Autumn

The fall and winter not only entice a change of weather, but the pitter-patter of rainwater refills lakes on the island. The end of summer also means new adventures amidst a welcome change of temperature and scenic beauty. Let’s take you on an inspiring journey, walking you through 4 dreamy lakes you should visit this season.

Athalassa Park Lake, Nicosia

It all starts at the centre of the island. Cocooned in the suburbs of Angladija, Strovolos and Latsia regions, lies a beautiful lake encircled by a quite vast walking path that also cycles friendly.  Not only, but your dogs are more than welcome to join you as the lake has a dedicated dog path as well. A refreshing change from the bustling roads and streets of Nicosia and a definite must-see during your lake journey.

Memi-Alepou mine lake, Xyliatos

Parting with the nation’s capital, you can find a larger lake located on the way to the village Xyliatos. Once a mine, today a beautiful lake during the Fall and Winter seasons. Filling with water the site has many lost for words during their first visit. Not to mention as it’s not known to many tourists, it’s as peaceful as a location can be. Found your tranquil holiday spot? Maybe this is it.

Larnaca Salt Lake

Moving on your journey you should only be upping the antes. The Larnaca Salt Lake does precisely that. Situated right beside the impressive Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, the lake is undoubtedly one of Larnaca’s most renowned attractions. It doesn’t only attract the locals or tourists, as each year it’s home to thousands of pink flamingos which migrate there between November and March (exactly on que when the lake is filled with water).

One of the most significant biotopes in Europe, it’s also one of the most vital habitats for waterfowl. A source of commerce from ancient times, salt was exported from Larnaca as far as Venice, a trade worth thousands of pounds every year.

Oroklini Salt Lake

We end the journey at Oroklini Salt Lake, a lesser-known contender to Larnaca’s lake, it is also smaller. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it certainly doesn’t bother the flamingo which also flocks here during their migratory period. A special site when it fills with water designated a Natura 2000 site, and named the best nesting site for the Black-winged Stilt and one of the top 5 nesting sites for the Spur-winged Lapwing on the island.
