Alternative activities to do in Cyprus
Do you consider yourself an alternative traveler? Do you travel for fun, adventure, and alternative activities? Then Cyprus is the perfect place to visit this summer.
The alternative activities that can be found on this magnificent island cover the sky, land, and sea.
Horse Riding
If you want to feel the wind rustling through your hair, as you gallop through sandy beaches and verdant countryside terrains, Cyprus makes it possible. With the earliest evidence of horse riding estimated as far back as 3500BC, the connection between people and the majestic horses shares a history deeper and older than most others. Searching online you can find many horse farms providing lessons and sunset ridings in Limassol, Larnaka and Paphos.
Kite Surfing
The best kite surfing in Cyprus isn’t hard to come by. Paramali, Akrotiri, Pissouri, and Larnaca sport centers are some of the best wind-propelled water experiences available. The best time of the year for this wind-filled fun is between May and September after which point the water gets too cool and the weather is not as enjoyable.
Bird Watching
Over 200 species occur as regular passage migrants in varying numbers. The number of birds stopping over during the spring and autumn migration is impressive as literally, millions pass through the island. Cyprus hosts three endemic bird species that breed here and nowhere else in the world: the Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca, the Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax and the Cyprus Scops Owl Otus cyprius. The Spring and Autumn migrations are phenomenal periods for bird watching in Cyprus. With the initial starting in February, and the latter in early August, birdwatchers can witness majestic birds such as Egyptian Vulture, Lesser Spotted Eagles, good numbers of Honey Buzzards, Black Kite, Red-footed and Lesser Kestrels, and Black and White Storks.
Scuba Diving
Scuba Diving is probably the most exciting activity on our list. With world-renown dive sites like the Zenobia Wreck, Cyprus’s marine life is just as impressive. There is a multitude of dive sites to choose from. Beginners and pros can both experience what the island’s deep blue has to offer. The Amphorae Caves are found off Paphos, which is where you’ll get to see ancient pottery, still intact. You can reach the Chapel from the shore, making it an excellent place for night diving. Overall, there are more than 40 dive sites on the island, located in Limassol, Larnaca, Kyrenia and Paphos. Don’t miss out! There are dive sites for beginners and experienced divers alike.
