A definite must-see: Rhodes Old Town
Travelling to the historic and charismatic island of Rhodes? No visit to the island is complete without visiting the archaic Old Town, boasting with life and character!
The Old Town of Rhodes is a maze-like neighbourhood inviting all its visitors to get lost within its cobblestoned alleys and discover amazing sights dating back to prehistoric times! The town is separated into three quarters. As you stroll through the area you will encounter the Jewish Quarter, the Turkish Quarter (Hora) and the Knights Quarter, known locally as the Kollakio. The latter of the three neighbourhoods attracts the most visitors as it contains numerous impressive sights dating back to medieval times, during which the Knights ruled the island.
Some of the most impressive sights to look out for while exploring the Knights Quarter include the grandiose Palace of the Grand Master, which was initially built in the 14th century but was rebuilt after an explosion in 1856. Other equally fascinated sites include the Inn of the Order of the Tongue of Italy and the Palace of Villiers de I’sle Adam as well as the Chapel of the Tongue of France also known as the Chapelle Francaise in French! Nestled on Symis Square are the remains of the 3rd century Temple of Aphrodite which is also a sight for soar eyes.
The Old Town is made up of a mixture of Latin, Turkish and Byzantine architectural marvels. Entrance to the outstanding town is accessible through nine gates, known in Greek as pyles.
