4 Reasons to visit Rhodes during Spring
Rhodes, the island of Knights, is home to rich medieval history, and a warm climate that surrounds the vibrant villages and beautiful nature. Not a lot of places can compete with Rhodes in Spring as holiday destinations. Let’s dive into our 4 top reasons why you should visit Rhodes this spring.
Medieval Town
The medieval town in Rhodes (commonly referred to as Old Town) is a must during your Spring holidays on the island. The crowds of tourists are not there, so you are able to take in the history and architecture of this open-air museum fully and in a peaceful atmosphere. The weather also gets more peaceful in Rhodes, with temperatures going from soaring heat to mild warmth. The city contained within the old fortifications is the largest active medieval town in Europe with over 6,000 inhabitants and a complex mix of architectural styles from different eras in Rhodes’s history. If you like a little local history during your holidays, this should be on top of your list.
Mesmerizing Nature Walks
Nature in Rhodes is what defines its glory. It’s one of the many reasons tourists come to the island in the first place. Famous for the Valley of Butterflies, the island’s fauna impresses every time. The flora is no joke either. A walk among ponds crossed by romantic bridges under the dense canopy is an utter delight, and if you make it as far as the Monastery of Kalopetra, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Rhodes.
Bicycle Routes
This is where the fun begins. You don’t have to be a mountain biker or a Tour de France finalist to take part in this ride of exploration. Get hold of a mountain bike and explore the dense Monolithos forest on the western coast. Alternatively, for the less adventurous, an easy coastal route takes you from the main town to nearby Ialysos. If you want a different set of views, you can always ride in the towns or venture through the roads on the coastline of the island. However, if you want a truly Rhodian experience, rent one of the locally hand-made bicycles that have been produced there for over 30 years.
Village Tours
You’re not really visiting Rhodes if you’re not going for a village tour. Get a deeper insight into the local culture, history, and traditions during an exploration of the inland. Beginning 10 km from the city, in the village of Koskinou: a labyrinthine settlement of houses with multicolored facades. In the southwestern part of the island, you will find wineries at Ebonas producing Greek and international wines. In the southeast, Archangelos, is where anyone who climbs up to light a candle at the Monastery of Panagia Tsambika will be awed by the rocky outcrops. On the way there, it’s worth stopping at the Faethon Association, which operates to protect a local breed of miniature horses.
Once in Lindos, make your way to the castle on a donkey (if you have the patience for it!), if not, hang back and wait for your friends to return while sipping Rhodes’s own VAP brand lemon soda. It’s so delicious!
So, you’re planning your trip. Where to stay? You ask yourself. If you’re looking for the highest level of sophistication and luxury, and hospitality that celebrates Rhodes culture look no further than Amada Colossos Resort.
