4 Green Spots in Corfu
Corfu is famed as being the greenest Greek island, therefore it is only fitting that its whole coastline is dotted with green parks starting from Anemomilos in Garitsa coast all the way to the Old Port within the City of Corfu.
Let’s take a look at the most popular parks in Corfu!
The renowned Spianada Square is definitely a top tourist attraction on the island. It is the second largest square in the Balkans that hosts annual international cricket tournaments where enthusiasts from all over the world come to compete or watch in fascination. Spinada Square is a popular meeting point amongst locals and tourists alike since it is the ideal place for children to play, have a coffee at a nearby cafe or just laze around and read while relaxing within nature.
The famed square can be found between the Old Castle and the heart of the city. It was named after the Italian word ‘spianare’ which means flatten. This is because, during the Venetian rule, the area used to be a fort and thus it was essential that the land between the castle and city remains barren and empty. Today the square is buzzing with life where locals and visitors enjoy afternoon strolls, sitting in cafes and the ideal area where social and cultural events are held.
During the Venetians’ rule in Corfu, the Town Hall Square was an important meeting place where the aristocracy socialised. At the square, you will notice the Bank of Greece which in Venetian times housed the first lyrical theatre in the east! The theatre was named ‘San Giacomo.’ Today, the square remains popular among locals and tourists who meet up and grab a coffee or have a quick bite to eat at one of the surrounding cafes and restaurants.
Durrells Bosketto is a charming little garden that offers visitors the best view of the famous Old Fortress. The garden is dedicated to the notable Lawrence Durrell to commemorate his significant contribution to the island. On the premises, you will also encounter several monuments which include the monuments of Lord Guilford, the politician Ioannis Theotokis and the poet Lorentz Mavilis.
The Three Martyrs Park can be found parallel to Garitsa Bay. This green paradise-like park has become incredibly popular over the years with local taverns and cafeterias serving delicious local specialities under the shade of the park’s towering trees. This is the place to be if you wish to taste the true Corinthian’s lifestyle!
