Zakynthos proves that all good things come in small packages

Greetings to all travel enthusiasts! Sometimes even the smallest things hold a special place in our hearts. All good things come in small packages and the sunny holiday destination of Zakynthos is the living proof. The small slice of heaven dropped in the Ionian Sea with a population of only about 50000 inhabitants. Zakynthos is an island with rich history and wonderful sights that attracts thousands of tourists to its wonderful shores. Despite the Greek economic crisis tourism has increased significantly and major investments were carried out all over the island to boost the infrastructure and enhance the attractiveness of a complete holiday package that has so much to offer.

Navagio Beach is a landmark of Zakynthos and one of the most recognised beaches in the whole of Greece. It offers breathtaking views and it is a memorable sight that attracts almost all tourists that visit the island. In the summer it can get a bit crowded and it is best to go really early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You cannot visit Zakynthos and not go to Navagio Beach and take some photos. Those of us who were lucky enough to go can tell you that the actual experience is even more beautiful than the photos you see on the internet.

Navagio Beach is located on the north-west coast just under the colossal limestone cliffs of Volimes Mountains and it is also known as Shipwreck Beach and Smuggler’s Cove. The nicknames are derived from the wreck of a ship smuggling cigarettes that was pursued by the Greek Navy and in its effort to escape hit the rocks and sunk back in 1983. Now the rusty old ship is dipped into the white sandy beach and blends harmoniously with the clear turquoise waters and the imposing limestone cliffs. Navagio Beach is only accessible by boat and you can either hire one yourself in order to spend as much time as you like on each location or take a guided tour that you can book from the port.

Greek people and especially islanders are extremely religious and this is evident throughout the island as you will come across many churches and monasteries. Besides the tremendous tourist developments and the import of many foreign moralities, the locals are passionate about keeping the traditions and staying true to their roots. To experience something different you should rent a car and take a trip to the traditional villages of Zakynthos that lay away and untouched by tourism and time. Drive around and taste the local cuisine in the village taverns as well as the homemade sweets and Greek coffee at the local coffee shops.

The second largest village of the island is the mountainous Maherado and has a population of about a thousand residents. It is 10kw away from the capital and the main attraction is the Church of Agia Mavra. The church is located in the centre of the village, it was built in the 14th century and is famous for hosting the miraculous icon of Agia Mavra. The icon dates back to the third century and originated from Egypt where the Saint actually lived. There are many offerings next to the icon and amongst them, you can see the expensive valuable jewel of Queen Olga. Next to the church stands a glorious 35-metre high bell tower.

This is all, for now, my dear fellow adventurers. In conclusion please remember that life is short and beautiful and it is strictly up to you to enjoy it and live it to the fullest.
