The colossal beauty of Rhodes
Greetings to all travel enthusiasts! A lot of centuries ago when sailing into the port of Rhodes you would have been stunned by the majestic medieval Castle of the Grand Master of Knights and the magnificent statue of the Colossus of Rhodes (35 meters high), one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. Today you shall be stunned by the beauty, the historical monuments and the hospitality of this sunny Greek island.
The village of Lindos is a must visit when holidaying in Rhodes. It lies 47km away from Rhodes town and it is a one hour trip by car or bus. The village was originally established by the Dorians some 10000 years B.C. and it was a major commercial centre up until the foundation of Rhodes town. Nowadays it is a tourist attraction with winding narrow paved streets that are filled with white houses, cafeterias and tiny little shops that mostly sell souvenirs, lace and jewellery. At night when the shops close their doors, they give way to the bars and the rooftop restaurants. Feel free to experience a romantic walk along the small streets, have a few drinks at the wonderful local bars and definitely try out the Greek cuisine in the lovely restaurants.
Lindos is an attractive traditional village that represents all things Greek and beautiful as it successfully combines the architecture and heritage with the pleasures of the modern. Please note that no vehicles are allowed into the village and the only method of transportation besides your own two feet are the good old donkeys that will also take you all the way up the hill to the Acropolis of Lindos.
The Acropolis of Lindos is an archaeological site that stands on top of the village with the ruins of a walled fortress and the remains of ancient temples. Here you will come across a Doric 4th-century temple devoted to the patron Goddess Athena Lindia, an auditorium, the entrance of the Sanctuary with the staircase and the five door openings while at the foot of the staircase there is an ancient Roman trireme ship carved onto the rock. There is also a Roman temple and a medieval castle that was built in the 14th century by the Knights of St John. The views are incredible and everything is well preserved. The climb is a bit long but it is definitely worth it and time passes by quite quickly at the top. Watch the monuments, take the necessary photos and observe the mesmerising views.
