The Carnival is coming to Town
It’s that time of year again you have all been waiting for! Yes, it’s carnival season in Cyprus! As you all know, the island has been celebrating the carnival for hundreds of years. The largest and most renowned parade takes place in Limassol but Paphos is also a top destination to enjoy the carnival festivities! Let’s take a look.
The Paphos Carnival is a fun-packed event, where the Municipality of Paphos organises lots of traditional and modern activities. The colours are bright, the music is loud and the atmosphere is festive. It is not Rio, but it definitely is an event you must add to your bucket list.
As always, the Carnival is held the weekend before the start of Easter Lent. It is actually the last celebration before the Lent starts, which is followed by Green Monday. This year carnival celebrations will start on the 8th of February and will end with the Grand Parade on the 17th of February.
Every year the King of the Paphos Carnival enters the city reflecting a different theme. This year’s theme is none other than Rio! The King’s entrance signals the start of the festivities, where local dance schools, the municipal band and cheerleaders will accompany him. The King of the Carnival along with the other participants will parade along the main avenue of Paphos and will end up at Kennedy Square where the carnival feast will commence with lots of food, drinks and musical entertainment. Other events are scheduled to take place during the week like the Giorgalletos Candadators.
The event no one should miss is taking place on the Saturday, 17th of February, and is none other than the Grand Parade that will take place along Poseidonos Avenue. The city is transformed into a big carnival party as elaborate floats, costumed groups, choirs and bands as well as dance groups come together creating a unique carnival atmosphere!
