Most visit the village simply to soak in the breathtaking views of Palaokastritisa and unwind in one of the traditional kafenia. If you are up for a nature walk, you can take the trek leading down to Palaiokastritisa bay. The locals’ surnames derive from soldiers who protected Angelokastro during the Byzantine period. The houses transport you to the 18th and 19th centuries. Bella Vista is a wonderful way to get a taste of real Corfu and its traditions.

Are you feeling active and need to try something different? Corfu has the answer! Canyoning is the ideal sport that combines climbing, walking, river passing and swimming! The island is rich in canyons, so all you need to do is pick the one you wish to explore and enjoy the ride!

The ancient villa, Mon Repos Palace, was originally built as a summer residence for Thomas Maitland, the English Commissioner at the time, and his Greek wife Nina Palatianou. The villa’s garden is a sight for sore eyes. The garden was open to the public by Empress Elisabeth of Austria who lived in the palace in 1863. The Empress was instantly captivated by Corfu and built the famed Achillion Palace. After Corfu officially joined Greece in 1864, the mansion was given as a gift to King George I, who named it Mon Repos. The king’s family holidayed during the summer months till 1967, when the monarchy came to an end. The palace later was in ruins, but restorations were completed in the early 1990s. Mon Repos is where multiple royals were born like Prince Philip and Princess Alexia.

The famed Achillion Palace lies in the traditional Gastouri village and was built in 1890 by Empress Elizabeth of Austria who visited the island during the summer months. Sadly, the empress did not enjoy her palace for a long time as she was brutally killed by assassins in 1898. The palace is not only famed for its classical architectural style and extravagance, which is appreciated by whomever, visits it. Visitors also are amazed with the palace’s gardens, full of trees and flowers but also sculptures. The Achillion Palace gained popularity and has been extensively visited since “For Your Eyes Only”, the famed James Bond movie was filmed here.
