More than Meets the Eye in Limassol

During our last holiday in Limassol we realised there is so much more to the city and its surrounding areas that meet the eye. We were introduced to a brand new aspect of the city and appreciated new features and landmarks we were not aware existed. Limassol is a top tourist resort and most jetsetters spend their day lazing on its brown-golden sandy beaches and by nightfall enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife. Those are all great of course; but Limassol is home to so much more than meet the eye! Let’s take a quick look!

Countryside & Verengaria Hotel

While touring the countryside of Limassol, visit the picturesque village of Prodromos and wander through its cobblestoned lanes. Stop by the traditional kafenio and listen to old men’s stories. The hospitality of the locals will surely captivate you in no time at all!

maxresdefaultOn your way back you’ll come across the now abandoned Verengaria Hotel. Its imposing and grandiose structure is hard to miss! The ragged looking hotel was built in the early 20th century. People all around the island and the Middle East crowded the hotel year in and year out. At the time Verengaria was a real hit! The hotel provided first-rate facilities and services accompanied by its exquisite architectural style, and thus became famous in a heartbeat.

At the time, Verengaria Hotel was equipped with an in-house casino, nightclub, bars, playgrounds and grand dining room which added to its success. Staying at the hotel was a definite social event and it boasted with life and laughter. It was nicknamed the Hotel of Kings, since the elite and royalty like the King of Egypt, used to stay there. The truth is the hotel was named after the Queen of Navarre, we all know as Berengaria.

Today, the Verengaria Hotel remains one of the most popular off-the-track attractions on the island which is visited by tourists all through the year.

The Kourion Stadium

Visit the ancient city kingdom of Kourion, Limassol’s ancient archaeological site is in Limassol and walk in the footsteps of past civilisations. One of the most impressive finds is the 2nd century Kourion Stadium.  At the time the stadium was used to host game and sport events like horse racing.  The dominating structure could hold up to 6000 spectators! Can you believe it?!

Madari Mountain & Breathtaking Views

chkgaptureJust before nightfall climb to the top of Madari Mountain. Once on the peak of the mountain you will definitely be amazed by the infinite beauty before you. Standing on the one side, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Nicosia while when turning towards the other side, Limassol and its shimmering lights lay before you. The view is truly breathtaking!
